A very brief description of the professional life of Benoit Jones.

Benoit Jones has just written a thesis with the title "Stresses in Sprayed Concrete Tunnel Junctions". This doctorate is being sponsored by Mott MacDonald's tunnels division and the EPSRC. Benoit has become a leading authority on stress measurement methods for sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels, the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), and numerical modelling of SCL tunnel junctions. His work on how the NATM should be applied to soft ground is (slowly!) revolutionising the industry.

Benoit is a graduate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers, an active member of the British Tunnelling Society and British Geotechnical Association, as well as a member of ITA-AITES, ISSMGE and the ISRM.

Benoit read Civil Engineering at the University of Bristol and obtained a first class honours MEng. He spent the third year in France at the Institut des Sciences et Techniques de Grenoble studying Geotechnical Engineering. It was there, in the midst of the Alps, that he first developed his passions for both skiing and geotechnics.
